This shingled complex of vacation retreat and guest house is set on a woodland site that slopes down to the shores of Lake Michigan. They form an elliptical courtyard, serving both as heart of the buildings and as an unexpected arrival point. The ceiling of the double bracket-shaped great room mimics the interior of a great wooden dory, overturned but sheltering. The house's arc acts to provide each lakeside room with its own distinct view, like an over scaled bay window. Local limestone retaining walls with arched apertures anchor the house into the site; white birches and native flora complete the intimate setting.
